BENEFITS AND USE OF STABILIZED EDIBLE-OIL-SATURATED CLAY IN FEED PRODUCTS
Grow Max® and Show Horse® nutritional products for livestock, poultry and aquaculture are high quality and low-cost. These products can be marketed as stand-alone conditioning salt or as ingredients and supplements for formulating other products including molasses blocks and tubs. Other than salt, the advantages include caloric value, essential fatty acids delivery, mycotoxin scrubbing in the gastrointestinal tract, and improved digestive efficiency.
Grow Max® and Show Horse® are branded names for stabilized edible-oil-saturated clay (SEOSC) that is composed of human food-grade vegetable oil, human food-grade clay, and feed-grade salt. Calcium in the form of feed-grade limestone or other approved sources are added if needed. Unlike yellow grease and many other fat sources used in animal feed products, the vegetable oil is food-grade quality and delivers essential fatty acids in addition to its caloric value. The clay component provides mycotoxin scrubbing and contributes to digestive efficiency improvement. Most livestock are self-regulating in their salt intake allowing the products to be offered free choice. The SEOSC can be blended into formulated feeds at the desired salt percentage.
Oil-saturated clay is derived from edible oil refining and has long been recognized as having excellent potential to be a high-quality livestock feed ingredient. It contains about 30% by weight food-grade oil and is vulnerable for spontaneous combustion. Because of this risk, it has historically been landfilled at a cost of $150,000 to $300,000 per year for each refinery site. Sustainable Feed Innovations LLC has patented a simple, unique, and inexpensive process to eliminate the combustion hazard by blending the edible-oil-saturated clay with feed grade salt and/or lime. Once stabilized, the resulting product (SEOSC) is safe to use as a feed ingredient. Including SEOSC in the formulation of feed products allows for the addition of superior quality food-grade ingredients at a lower price.
As a feed component, stabilized edible-oil-saturated clay (SEOSC) provides the following advantages:
